Considering Doing MBBS Abroad?

Are you considering doing MBBS from abroad? If your answer is yes, then other thoughts which come to mind is what important points should I consider before making a decision.

This article will help you to make your decision easily.

The first and most important thing to know is whether MBBS degree from abroad is recognized in India or not?

In India, we have Medical Council of India which oversees the MBBS education in India. Medical Council of India, also known as MCI is an important body of Government of India and every Doctor has to get a license from MCI to be able to practice in India.

MCI has a list of medical colleges for foreign countries and it is very important that you should select a medical college or a University which is listed with Medical Council of India.

If the University is not approved by Medical Council of India then the MBBS degree from abroad is not valid in India.

After completing MBBS from abroad it is compulsory for a student to clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) which is also popularly known as MCI Screening Test to be able to practice in India. This test is conducted by National Board of Examinations (NBE) on behalf of MCI. It is held twice a year.

Further, it is important to note hear the MCI rules states that the Medical University or College should also be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).

If you are considering doing MBBS from China then it is very important for you to check the list of Medical Universities in China which are approved. Chinese Ministry of Education every year issues a list of Universities in China which will give admission for MBBS in China along with the number of seats available in each Medical University of China. This list is every year updated on the website of Embassy of India in China. List of approved Medical Universities in China is also every year updated on the website of Medical Council of India.

The second most important thing which needs to be considered in the quality of education being provided by foreign medical universities.

There are some very good Government Universities which are as old as 200 years old in countries like Ukraine. They are known worldwide to provide quality MBBS education. Fees is also reasonable at these Universities. Further, these universities have partnerships, affiliations and collaborations worldwide with other universities in the world like Germany, Spain, Norway, USA which also teach MBBS. These Universities also send their staff to foreign MBBS universities for technical exchange and knowledge sharing.

Many Indian students think that it is better to do MBBS from private universities in India as students don’t have to sit for MCI Screening Test. Though this is correct but all private medical colleges in India are not good. Some are located on highways, small towns where good quality and experienced professors and doctors are not there. Moreover, these colleges charge very high fees and in comparison it is quite cheap to study mbbs abroad – at even 1/3rd the cost of private colleges in India.

Many Indian students nowadays are also preferring MBBS in Philippines as it is a English speaking country and since the country has very high population and conditions and climate are similar to India, they good get quality practice while doing MBBS there. Moreover, some Universities in Philippines like Our Lady of Fatima University School of Medicine have affiliations with hospitals in USA and students have an opportunity to finish their final year of MBBS in USA.

Many Indian students also prefer China for MBBS as MBBS in China is of very high quality and Indian students doing MBBS in China get good jobs in India easily after completing MCI Screening Test.

The next most important issue that needs to be considered is safety. Countries like China, Russia, Ukraine, Philippines, Kyrgyzstan are extremely safe for Indian students. All Universities have International Students Association and they assist the students throughout the their academic life while pursuing their studies for MBBS.

Senior Indian students are also very helpful and caring and assist new comers to settle down. These countries also do not discriminate and welcome Indian students with an open heart.

Many parents and students also worry where my child will stay or what he / she will eat while doing MBBS from abroad.

There is no need to worry for parents as at all places there are safe and secure hostels with security guards and CCTV cameras. There are separate hostel for boys and girls and entry into the hostel is strictly restricted to it’s occupants. Outsiders are not allowed and entry is through swiping the cards issued to the students.

Almost all good Universities offering MBBS course abroad have Indian food – both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. They hire Indian cooks on work permits to ensure that Indian students doing MBBS get food similar to their eating habits.

The rooms provided by MBBS Universities in their hostels are neat and clean, spacious and with good ventilation. Generally 2, 3 or 4 students share a room depending on the size of the rooms. Rooms are well equipped with bed, wardrobe / cupboard, study table and chair. Mattresses are also provided and students just have to take bed sheets and pillow covers.

Many Indian restaurants are also located in almost all cities.

Accommodation is also very reasonable. Some Universities offer hostel for as low as US$ 500/- (Rs. 32,500/-) per year only.

One thing which parents need to look into is the success rate of MCI Screening Test. The higher the success rate the better the MBBS University is.

Another important point which a family has to consider is the budget for completing MBBS course from abroad. Except for tuition fees, hostel and food there are many other expenses which MBBS agents in India do not tell to the parents and then these come as a surprise or a shock to the students and his/her family.

There are lot of other expenses during student life when a student is pursuing MBBS from abroad. Toiletries like soap, shampoo, hair oil, moisturitizer, perfume and other articles of daily use like tooth paste, tooth brush are some of the basic needs for which a student needs to plan for.

Apart from this other expenses include purchase of medical books for MBBS studies, stationary items, pen & pencils, requirement of internet connectivity, a good mobile phone, local sim card and it’s minimum monthly rental, local travel expenses to go to University from hostel and back, local transportation expenses for going to hospitals for clinical rotations etc.

Expenses in countries like Nepal and Bangladesh while doing MBBS are reasonable and similar to India. MBBS in Philippines costs a little more as accommodation is a little costly there though food expenses are same as in India.

Feedback received from students studying MBBS in Ukraine has been encouraging and students say Ukraine is cheaper as compared to expenses in India.
